Exploring Pywel’s world and piecing together the Greymanes’ story are big parts of Crimson Desert, but fighting is very much at the core. Pearl Abyss has already spoken at length about how combat will work in the game, and it’s teasing even more depth.
The latest video in the studio’s Features Overview series dives into combat mechanics, specifically how players will be able to chain attacks from various weapons, skills, and characters to deal serious damage and take the initiative in battles.
As launch nears, this new feature showcase further cements the feeling that Crimson Desert wants players to experience fast and fluid fights that reward you for being creative.
A Wide Range of Weapons and Playstyles
Screenshots and gameplay footage have teased Kliff utilizing various weapons but this latest deep dive offers more information on that flexibility. You won't be locked into a single style or weapon and can swap between multiple combat options when you feel the need.
Confirmed combat tools:
- Swords, shields, spears, and twin blades
- Axes, greatswords, and rapiers
- Muskets and additional ranged options
Fist strikes and grappling will also play a larger role than just being quick fill-ins.
Advanced Combat Mechanics and Abilities
In addition to simple weapon strikes, Crimson Desert wants players to utilize their wits when fighting. Enemies can be dragged off their steeds with a grapple, granting players access to steal their mount and wreak havoc on nearby adversaries.
Players will also have their own distinctive attacks such as:
- Heavy duty finishers reminiscent of past action games
- Launchers and brutal finishers
- Flair based crowd-control options
One example given is an outrageous air slam attack seen in your typical action RPG finisher.
Magic, Movement, and Elemental Combos
Magic isn't separated into it's own system. Most attacks can be augmented with elemental effects, allowing for all sorts of combo opportunities.
Players can:
- Leap into the air with Wind magic
- Attack from above with dive attacks
- Apply elemental effects to melee or ranged weapons
The emphasis on mobility and verticality really adds another dimension to fights, particularly big ones.
