In their latest earnings report, Sony have confirmed that their big live service push is still well underway. Sony President Hiroki Totoki stated that 12 live service games are currently in development across various first-party studios and that six of those will be coming out by the end of fiscal year 2025 (September 2025).
Recently, certain reports suggested that Sony are scaling back on their live service strategy for PlayStation Studios and that some games like Naughty Dog's The Last of Us multiplayer project are in big trouble.
Totoki did not specifically comment on these reports but he did say that the company are carefully reviewing the 12 live service games they have in development at the moment to ensure the best possible quality that gamers expect from Sony.
"We are reviewing this…we are trying as much as possible to ensure [these games] are enjoyed and liked by gamers for a long time," Totoki said.
Some of the live service projects that Sony have currently in development include Haven Studios' Fairgame$, Firewalk's Concord and Bungie's Marathon to name a few.
Games like MLB The Show series also count as live-service titles, so don't expect 12 brand-new games as a lot of Sony's existing IP is part of this live-service strategy.
Overall, it does look like some of these live service projects failed to reach the quality level Sony expect from their first-party titles. Sony's recently acquired studio Bungie allegedly pointed out some big issues with The Last of Us project in their internal reports.
Making live service games obviously requires a massive effort from the devs, who are not familiar with the concept as they mostly focused on cinematic, narrative-driven single-player games so far.
Whether Sony made a mistake when they decided to switch their focus to live-service games or not, it remains to be seen once these games finally start releasing.
