After many years of troubled development, Naughty Dog and Sony have finally decided it's time to cancel The Last of Us Online and start focusing on other projects.

The Last of Us Factions 2, The Last of Us Online or whatever you want to call it, is officially dead. Developer Naughty Dog confirmed the news via their blog, stating that they've "made the incredibly difficult decision to stop development on that game."

Naughty Dog revealed that the multiplayer project has been in pre-production ever since they worked on The Last of Us Part 2, growing in ambition throughout the years to the point where the scope was so big they would need to put every available developer on this project to make it see the light of the day.

Things went completely south when Naughty Dog realised they didn't have the capacity to work on their other single-player projects and The Last of Us multiplayer simultaneously. Soon after, the team decided it was time to put the latter to rest.

"To release and support The Last of Us Online we’d have to put all our studio resources behind supporting post launch content for years to come, severely impacting development on future single-player games. So, we had two paths in front of us: become a solely live service games studio or continue to focus on single-player narrative games that have defined Naughty Dog’s heritage," Naughty Dog said in the statement.

And while this will certainly be devastating news for all The Last of Us fans, it's not all doom and gloom. Naughty Dog confirmed that they have more than one single-player project in the works at the moment, which could be the rumoured The Last of Us Part 3 and a brand new IP.

We really hope to see these new titles sometime soon, especially the new IP. Don't get us wrong, we love The Last of Us and Uncharted but we're really excited to see Naughty Dog go off the beaten path.
