Owlcat Games has published another developer diary for The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. This latest entry highlights the role of player choice in the upcoming RPG and how decisions will impact story elements and characters.
Choices range from minor interactions to larger decisions that alter NPC storylines and the player’s world. Decisions have meaningful consequences and play into the idea of having a unique playthrough while allowing players greater agency over their story.
Your Origin Will Impact Your Story
Players can choose their character’s origin before the main game even begins. There are three options:
- Martian
- Earther
- Belter
Your chosen origin will have a unique backstory that you learn more about over time. Origins also unlock faction-specific quests and determine how NPCs and factions perceive you.
Choosing your origin will have consequences beyond your character’s appearance.
Player Choices Impact Quest Solutions
The player will frequently face decisions that determine how they handle situations and characters they meet. Players can handle these scenarios through violence, empathy, pragmatism, or selfishness.
Your decisions will have both immediate and long-term consequences that alter your character and can change the course of events.
Character Backstories Affect Your Crew
Player decisions will also impact crew members, who all have their own personalities, storylines, and consequences. Owlcat used companion Polly as an example of how you can shape a crew member’s story.
Polly is the crew’s youngest member and a Belter who wants to help her people and find her own way. You can affect Polly’s outlook through small choices throughout the game. However, there will be a critical decision that allows you to choose her mentor.
That decision can lock Polly into developing a certain way and will net your crew a unique skill line if you play your cards right.
Choices Create Unique Playthroughs
Owlcat says your choices will build on each other to create a protagonist that reflects the player’s journey. Your decisions impact more than your character, as they can affect crew members and changes to the game world.
Player choice should also ensure players have enough reasons to play The Expanse: Osiris Reborn multiple times. As origins, decisions, and interactions can lead to different playthroughs.
