At yesterday's court hearing prior to the takeover of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft, among others, we were able to learn some interesting statistics presented by Sony related to the popularity of Call of Duty titles on their PlayStation consoles.
Many were genuinely shocked by one fact. Specifically, Sony disclosed a genuinely astounding statistic: over a million PlayStation owners have never played anything but Call of Duty games on their consoles.
In addition to this, more than six million players spend around 70 per cent of their play time playing Call of Duty games on PlayStation, which is really unbearable. Therefore, it is not surprising that Sony is fighting such a fierce legal battle to deny Microsoft Call of Duty exclusivity, as doing so would be a huge loss for them.
The hearing cited earlier also revealed that the Call of Duty series made an astounding $27 billion up until 2020. Although there is no data on how much money Call of Duty earned in the last three years, it is believed that, given the popularity of Warzone and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, that figure must have exceeded $30 billion combined with the previous sales.
Bobby Kotick, the CEO of Activision, said in court that 70 million people play Call of Duty games every day. Although he withheld information about the distribution among the platforms, it is safe to conclude that the majority of them play Call of Duty on mobile devices.
