Insiders are reporting that Rockstar Games has started early development work on the next Red Dead game. There has been no official confirmation from the developer, but several sources have made overlapping claims that the studio has quietly begun to form the foundation for a Red Dead Redemption 3.
The project is still believed to be at a very early stage. The sources all indicate that it will be years before anything is announced. However, the multiple unconfirmed reports have reinvigorated speculation around the future of Rockstar’s western franchise.
Pre-production work reportedly in motion
Insider reports indicate that work could have begun as early as 2023. At this stage, pre-production work is said to include early development of narrative elements, potential characters, and world-building.
Full production would not begin for at least a few years. As with all Rockstar games, that early work will include months or years of planning before the first playable build is developed.
Sources indicate that Rockstar is treating the project as a long-term investment. Development would not scale up significantly until after Grand Theft Auto VI has been released and supported in full. If true, the more significant production work could begin around 2026 or later.
Franchise status and job listings hint at sequel
It’s been stated that Red Dead is a “permanent franchise” in the past. Take-Two Interactive has used those very words to describe it. They have not been shy about saying that they’d love to see a sequel.
This doesn’t mean that development on a Red Dead Redemption 3 is underway, or even planned for the near-term. This simply suggests that Rockstar has plans for the franchise in the long run.
The Red Dead job listing teaser
We have also been seeing job listings from Rockstar that suggest a new entry. They have teased:
- Advanced AI systems
- Massive historically inspired open worlds
- Dynamic NPC behavior and world simulation
Does this mean a Red Dead Redemption 3 is in the works?
If true, it sounds like Rockstar is just being their typical, methodical selves. Red Dead Redemption 2 was one of the highest quality productions we’ve seen yet, and an entry 3 would likely lean into those systems even more.
Until we have a confirmation though, it’s probably best to take things with a grain of salt. The company is being notably quiet. We have no title, no window, and no official communication.
