Physical copies of Grand Theft Auto 6 for PS5 will have region locked game codes, Rockstar Games has confirmed. That means they will only work if redeemed in the same region as they were purchased.
GTA 6's Xbox Series X|S edition is not region locked. While GTA 6's physical edition won't come with a game disc, the PS5 version does include a code to redeem the game. Rockstar now says these codes are locked to the region they are sold in on their FAQ.
Regions affected are as follows:
- North America: United States, Canada
- Latin America: Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru and others that they support.
- Brazil.
- United Kingdom.
- Japan.
- South Korea.
- Saudi Arabia & United Arab Emirates.
- Rest of Asia: Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia.
- EMEA and Oceania: Most of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Turkey and more.
Rockstar further clarified that Japan has another limitation. GTA 6 product codes will expire on January 12, 2027 due to Japanese law. This means that players will have to redeem their code 170 days from the games launch date of November 19, 2026.
While Rockstar has yet to give a reason for this PlayStation-exclusive limitation, it most likely stems from PlayStation's regional account systems and digital store policies, while Xbox continues to allow region-free code redemption for this title.
Regardless of backlash regarding the game not having a physical disc and recent news on regional locks, Grand Theft Auto 6 still remains on top of many pre-order lists.
Analysts predict the game has already made hundreds of millions of dollars through digital pre-orders alone, and could earn between $3.3 billion to $5.2 billion in its opening week should digital sales continue at this rate.
