Leaks have been the primary means through which we’ve learned about Grand Theft Auto 6, Rockstar Games’ next installment in its wildly popular series.
Outside of a couple lawsuits relating to leaked materials and some tidbits found in court documents about the game’s engine, we haven’t really gotten any official updates about what Rockstar has planned to release.
However, a new rumour claims that GTA 6 will skip a physical release entirely at launch. Reportedly, Rockstar and Take-Two have both decided that they want to avoid premature gameplay and story leaks as much as possible leading up to release, something that’s become all too common over the last couple years with blockbuster titles. If true, Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch digital-only on consoles.
Report Says GTA 6 Will Release Digitally First
According to new reporting by Play Promotion Entertainment (PPE), via Graczdari, physical copies of GTA 6 are said to be delayed. In their report, PPE notes that their source is reliable as they have “leaked correct info about releases on physical copies before.” PPE’s source is allegedly an individual who works closely with physical video game sales in Europe.
Reportedly, Take-Two wants to avoid leaks at all costs ahead of GTA 6’s launch, hence the delay to physical copies. Sending physical copies out too early could risk gameplay elements, stories, and more being spoiled before launch if they fall into the wrong hands at any point in production or shipping, particularly through physical retailers or third-party logistics teams.
It has been reported previously that a physical edition could launch as early as three or four weeks following launch. This allows sales to die down before boxes start hitting shelves.
Other outlets are reporting that physical copies will not release until 2027. More is reportedly to be revealed by mid-February though. Until Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive says otherwise, all information remains speculation. It’s important to note PPE has been correct before when it comes to leaks.
They were right when saying Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is releasing on PS5, as well as when they said Oblivion Remastered would launch digitally first, physical releases follow three weeks after launch.
