GTA 6 likely won’t cost $100, former Rockstar director says
GTA 6 will likely launch at a "normal" price rather than $100, according to former Rockstar technical director Obbe Vermeij

Key Points from the Article

  • Rockstar's strategy involves releasing at standard price to recruit the widest possible audience and monetize through online components over time, similar to GTA 5's model
  • Lower entry price would keep day-one sales strong, grow the online player base, and drive higher long-term spending on updates and DLC
  • An online mode for GTA 6 is rumored to be in development, making player count more valuable than higher initial pricing
GTA 6 will likely launch at a "normal" price rather than $100, according to former Rockstar technical director Obbe Vermeij

Former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij says GTA 6 is expected to launch at a regular price, with Rockstar likely relying on long-term online revenue instead of charging players more upfront.

The hype for Grand Theft Auto 6 has been unwavering. Between GTA 5's status as a best-selling game and the most profitable entertainment product of all time, it's no surprise to see huge expectations for Rockstar's next game.

GTA 6 was voted Most Anticipated Game at The Game Awards for two consecutive years, and the smallest of updates become major talking points on the internet.A recent talking point has been about the game's budget.

Rumours have hinted GTA 6 could be the most expensive game ever produced, which led to fears from some fans that Rockstar could directly charge players the price. According to a former Rockstar developer, that is unlikely.

GTA 6 will launch at a “normal” price, according to a Rockstar exec

In an interview with GamesHub, former Rockstar North technical director Obbe Vermeij has rejected the idea that GTA 6 will launch at $100. In recent weeks, various analysts have argued that Rockstar could “experiment” with AAA games being priced at that level, but Vermeij doesn’t see it happening.

Rockstar has a far “longer-term” vision, he said:

  • Release the game at a “normal” price
  • Recruit the “widest possible” audience
  • Make money over time from online components

He points to how this strategy was used for GTA 5, with the base game selling extremely well but GTA Online ultimately being where the money was made over several console generations.

Why a lower price makes sense for Rockstar

So what if GTA 6 costs an absurd amount to make. Vermeij’s point is that the game could actually do more damage to Rockstar in the long run if it’s priced too high.

Setting a lower entry price would allow them to:

  • Keep day-one sales strong
  • Grow their online player base
  • Drive higher long-term player spending on updates and DLC

Rockstar has yet to announce an online mode for GTA 6, but the game is rumoured to have been in development for years and leaks suggest that a mode is already in development. If that’s true, it would make sense for Rockstar to focus on player count over a slightly higher initial price.
