We haven’t officially heard about GTA 6 having multiplayer since it was announced, but recent court documents might have confirmed one of its expected facets. Court documents stemming from an on-going lawsuit between Rockstar Games and two former workers reportedly have internal devs discussing “online testing of 32 players” and their lobbies.
This was allegedly found through internal Discord messages used as evidence within the documents showing conversations around tests that had 32 people participating. This is what we currently have for lobby size in GTA Online, and it could mean Rockstar is keeping things stagnant with the next version of its massively popular online component.
Of course, this immediately brings up questions about GTA 6 Online and what we can expect moving forward with player count, sessions, and how large Rockstar is going to go technically with their game.
Rockstar is supposedly dialing up the size of everything in GTA 6, from systems to density within the world itself, so capping players at 32 like we have now makes me worry about performance compromises, gameplay hiccups, etc.
Obviously we won’t know for sure until more is revealed by Rockstar themselves, and there’s no confirmation that 32 is the final player count. Players in these tests can change until launch, who knows. Rockstar hasn’t said anything about GTA Online and isn’t revealing anything about it past the core game itself.
We know it exists, but we haven’t seen anything from Rockstar discussing what to expect. It will be interesting to see if this number holds true when we get more info on GTA VI Online. Again, this info is coming from court documents, not your typical “leaked from an anonymous source” scenario.
Players will likely want to see some sort of increase from what we have, but if this is true, we might be getting the same formula GTA Online has been running with for years just dialed up to 11.
