Sony just released a new PlayStation 5 system software update, version 26.01-12.60.00, which includes some small but welcome changes to various social and messaging features on the console.
Despite not being a massive overhaul to UI elements or game-focused features, Sony has maintained a recent trend of releasing software updates that enhance day-to-day activities on the PS5.
New Social and Messaging Features
Sony highlights these features as increasing visibility into your friend’s activities and allowing you to connect with them more quickly. The primary focus of this section of the update is centered around simplifying the process of joining friends who are in-game.
Players will now be able to join friends in their current game session directly from the Friends Activity widget located in the Welcome Hub. Instead of navigating through multiple menus to join friends who are playing something together, you can now join them right away.
Message read receipts were also added, which players have been requesting for a while now.
Here’s what you can expect from the messaging changes:
- Read receipts are optional
- Manage your visibility with privacy settings
- Rolling out to users gradually
Read receipts can be toggled on or off by heading into: Settings> Users and Accounts> Privacy> View and Customize Your Privacy Settings. Then, you can toggle the option on or off in Communication and multiplayer settings.
Usability and System Enhancements
Along with several new social features, update 26.01-12.60.00 focuses on improving the usability of the PS5. As stated by Sony, this includes changes to how your messages behave when viewing them on various screens throughout the console’s UI.
Additional changes include:
- General improvements to system software performance
- Various stability improvements that should decrease occurrences in the background
- Other minor changes that help the system feel quicker when using it daily
While some of these changes won’t be overtly noticed, they should provide a better PS5 experience the more you switch around playing games, messaging friends, and using social features.
