Sony is now enforcing a per-order limit on the PS5 Disc Drive in PlayStation Direct. Customers can only purchase one PS5 Disc Drive per order. The limitation was likely placed due to increased demand for the accessory.
Sony confirmed earlier this week that physical PlayStation game discs will no longer be produced starting January 2028, leading many players to want to buy the accessory while they still can.
PlayStation5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro owners currently need the Disc Drive in order to play physical game discs on their console. Earlier this week, Sony said it would no longer produce new physical game discs moving forward.
PlayStation Direct also mentions that there may be limits per household. Sony did not elaborate on how much stock is left, how long the limit will be enforced, or if the accessory will continue to be manufactured after physical PlayStation games are no longer produced.
It’s also unclear if Sony will increase production on the accessory in response to demand. There have been past occasions where PlayStation Direct has enforced a per-order limit of one on highly sought-after products. However, this is the first major time the accessory has had the limitation since the announcement that Sony will no longer produce physical PlayStation games.
It’s effectively the only way for PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro owners to play physical PlayStation games going forward, aside from owning a PS5 with the included Disc Drive.
Players are buying them up to continue to play their library of physical games, collectors are reportedly buying one just in case, and there’s always concern of resellers scooping up inventory to sell at a premium. With so many reasons for demand to spike, PlayStation Direct has decided to ensure every customer can get their hands on one. Sony has yet to address if they will be manufacturing more given the demand or changing plans.
