Sony has just released the newest PlayStation 5 system software update of July 2026. True to form for one of the console’s incremental monthly firmware updates, this patch is all about optimisation and focuses on performance improvements.
Delivering players from version 26.04-13.40.00 to 26.04-13.42.00, the new firmware is a relatively small system software update. Nevertheless, it’s another valuable contribution towards Sony’s effort to keep the PS5 as stable and bug-free as possible.
If you haven’t received the update yet, don’t worry, Sony tends to roll these out gradually over the course of a few days so you might just need to hang tight until tomorrow. Sony’s official patch notes for firmware version 26.04-13.42.00 list one item: improved system software performance and stability.
It’s not uncommon for Sony to leave it at that with these kinds of maintenance patches. As always, it may still address a number of background optimisations, bug fixes, and security updates that will help your console run smoother in a variety of ways. Players typically won’t notice these changes right away though.This is the sixth PS5 firmware update of 2026 and Sony has stuck to its typical monthly update cadence.
Like July’s firmware update from last year, this month’s patch puts more focus on maintaining the system than expanding upon it. So long as your PS5 is connected to the internet with automatic updates enabled, the system should download and apply the firmware update by itself.

All in all, even though this update doesn’t bring anything big to the table, we’ll definitely be taking monthly firmware updates like this as they arrive. Future updates will help to keep PS5 owners secure, stable, and ready to play all of the fantastic releases headed to PS5 for the remainder of 2026.
