UPDATE: Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company have now officially confirmed GTA 6 prices: $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition.
Original article: After years of speculation about whether Rockstar Games would break the $70 ceiling, we have an answer. Grand Theft Auto 6 will retail for $80, with the Ultimate Edition priced at $100. The figures come from Geoff Keighley, who stated he was sent the information directly by Rockstar and parent company Take-Two Interactive.
Breaking the $70 barrier
This makes GTA 6 one of the first major releases to push the standard edition to $80, a notch above the $70 that became the norm this console generation. It won't shock anyone who's followed the analyst chatter, since plenty had predicted Rockstar would use the game's enormous scale and pulling power to nudge the industry's pricing ceiling higher.
The wider question is what it signals. When the biggest game on the planet sets a new price point, others tend to follow, so $80 standard editions could become a lot more common after November. Whether players swallow it is another matter, though if any game can make an $80 tag stick, it's this one.
No disc in the box
The more contentious detail is the physical version. Rockstar has confirmed that the physical release won't actually contain the game on the disc. Instead, the box will include a download code, meaning you'll still need to download the entire game regardless of buying physically.
It's a continuation of a trend that's been creeping in across the industry, and it won't sit well with everyone. For collectors, a box with just a code rather than playable media undercuts much of the point of buying physical.
In fairness, GTA 6's likely install size makes a single-disc release genuinely difficult, so there's a practical logic to it. That won't make it any more palatable to physical-media holdouts, but it's the reality of a game this size.
Platforms and release
GTA 6 launches 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, priced at $80 for the standard edition and $100 for the Ultimate Edition. Pre-orders open at midnight local time on 25 June.
