Rockstar Games has finally commented on the recent Grand Theft Auto 6 leaks, following multiple clips featuring gameplay from the upcoming title hitting social media.
The leak was started by an unknown group going by the handle CYBERLEEK and has become one of the biggest GTA 6 headlines in recent days.
Minutes of gameplay, along with more in-depth looks at GTA 6‘s various systems, were said to have been shown in the leak. While it was initially thought to be associated with other digital protests related to physical copies of video games, the leaks took a turn for the worse when CYBERLEEK started asking for payment in exchange for more footage.
Rockstar Has Made an Official Statement
Rockstar addressed the issue in an official statement posted to their website. In the message, Rockstar addresses how these leaks affect the team behind GTA 6, saying that the ongoing leaks are “heartbreaking for our team.”
The message from Rockstar was in direct response to leaks CYBERLEEK was posting online, allegedly trying to justify the protest by offering monetary incentives to people who wanted to see specific parts of the game leaked.
Shortly thereafter, CYBERLEEK’s involvement with money raised questions over its connection to the protests, with the account subsequently asking for large sums of money from users who wanted to see more of GTA 6.
Hours after the first footage was posted online, CYBERLEEK started to accept donations to release more GTA 6 footage. In a bizarre turn of events, the hacker group started letting people vote on which part of the game they wanted to see leaked next.
People could pay to have a say on what part of GTA 6 was leaked next, essentially paying the group to leak pieces of the game at CYBERLEEK’s discretion. It didn’t take long before users grew suspicious of CYBERLEEK’s intentions and asked questions regarding the funds being charged to users to vote on leaks.
Leaks aren’t always the best look at how a game will play when it’s fully released. As GTA 6 is still in development, many of the game’s systems shown in the leak can change between now and launch.
Characters can be redesigned, gameplay mechanics can be tweaked, and even entire features can be dropped if they don’t meet Rockstar’s standards by the time of release.
Rockstar Commented Before A Big GTA 6 Announcement
It should be noted that Rockstar’s comments were released in conjunction with an upcoming GTA 6 documentary, teasing what fans can expect from the game’s next installment. In collaboration with Take-Two Interactive and Netflix, Rockstar will release an official deep-dive into what fans can expect from GTA 6 on August 27.
This documentary will no doubt dive much deeper into what makes GTA 6 unique than what the recent leaks have shown. It will also feature newer footage of gameplay than what was spotted in the leaks.
