Grand Theft Auto 6 won’t make basic activities like driving through Vice City or stealing vehicles quite as easy as previous games. Rockstar Games wants to enhance those core activities with more realistic options and player choice.

Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, told IGN that GTA 6’s roads have been narrowed, and traffic density has been increased. Drivers will need to pay closer attention when driving, especially through crowded streets.

Players won’t be able to just muscle every car they want off the road either. While players will still be able to steal cars driven by NPCs, some parked cars will require special tools.

Not Every Car Will Be Available To Steal Right Away

Grand Theft Auto games have traditionally allowed players to steal just about any vehicle they come across. GTA 6 players will have to contend with varying levels of vehicle security before making a move.

Players won’t be able to steal every parked vehicle they come across. Some cars will need to be looked at again later in the game after players progress far enough in the story and acquire the proper equipment.

Adding tools and specialized hardware to steal certain vehicles also creates more depth to your vehicle progression. “You should care about which cars you’re stealing,” Nelson added. “You shouldn’t just steal the first car you see.”

Cars Will Feature Enhanced Security Systems

Players will come across vehicles with advanced security features. Some cars can have loud alarms and built-in GPS trackers that notify the police you’ve stolen it.

Players will eventually unlock a phone app in-game called Waink. Using this phone app, players will scan vehicles before stealing them.

The Waink app can tell players:

If the car is locked
If the vehicle has an alarm or tracker
How much you can sell it for
How much it costs to register the vehicle
What tool is required to steal it

Players may need to use something like a key cloner or Slim Jim, depending on the car. This should make stealing vehicles feel much more rewarding in GTA 6 and encourage players to engage with the game’s robust systems.
