EA yesterday officially confirmed that their annual F1 game release is coming later this year in May 2024. F1 24 is set to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S but also last-gen consoles - PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
And the last-gen version seems to be one of the biggest talking points among the F1 game community. Fans are disappointed that studio Codemasters are still developing for the old hardware, stating that the last-gen version will almost certainly mean a lack of new features and game engine improvements over last year's title.
Fans argue that over the last couple of years, the F1 series has become just another FIFA (now EA Sports FC) and Madden at this point, given that these annual releases feel more like yearly updates than full-fledged games that the community wants.
"Wow. F1 24: Same engine, same old-gen-support (are you serious?!) and the same bugs. We can't wait for it," one fan wrote. "No need to tease these yearly updates as a new game."
On Reddit, the post talking about the last-gen version of the game is one of the most popular posts on the F1 game subreddit with nearly 1k upvotes and close to 400 comments.
Some F1 fans are still optimistic and point out that games like NBA 2K and Madden have very different last-gen and current-gen versions, which could also be true for the upcoming F1 game. "Games like Madden have stayed on the previous gen on the old engine while the next-gen moved on, so not sure why this means we are sure of no new engine?" one Redditor wrote.
It remains to be seen if there are any differences between the last-gen and current-gen versions of F1 24. In the case of EA Sports FC, the PS5 and XSX|S versions usually include some big features that are not present in the PS4 or Xbox One builds, like Hypermotion tech which brings more realistic animations for players.
According to the game's official website, F1 24's two key features are the all-new Career Mode and the new handling system trademarked as "EA Sports Dynamic Handling". It is possible that these new features may not be present in the last-gen version but we'll have to wait for the proper gameplay reveal and deep dive which is set for April 2024, to see if that's the case.
