Sony have recently cancelled a new Twisted Metal live-service game, which was in early development at UK-based studio Firesprite, according to reports.

Sony Interactive Entertainment laid off around 900 people today, shut down PlayStation London Studio and canceled several unannounced projects. According to the latest breaking news, one of those cancelled projects was a brand-new Twisted Metal game.

Bloomberg reports that the game was one of Sony's live service projects in development at UK-based studio Firesprite, who shipped VR experience Horizon Call of the Mountain last year.

The Twisted Metal project reportedly was not anywhere near close to release - it was in the early stages of development, presumably concept phase and was not even greenlit by the PlayStation heads.

The details about the Twisted Metal reboot as pretty much non-existent so we can only guess what the game could have become. The drive-and-shoot concept of the original games probably would not translate well to modern gaming audiences but Firesprite certainly had some ideas on how to change some things and introduce new features to make it feel fresh given that they pitched the game to Sony.

Anyway, it's shut down now and there's not much point in speculating what the game could have been when we'll never get to play it. There is a chance that at some point, PlayStation decide to revisit this franchise but that probably won't be happening anytime soon.

In case you are not familiar with the Twisted Metal series, which is probably likely if you're a new-age gamer, it's a vehicular combat series where players choose their preferred vehicle and drive around the map, shooting at other players with a wide variety of weaponry like rockets, Gatling guns and more.

The series was very popular in the PS1 era but not so much later on during the PS3 generation, which is why Sony decided to shelve it. You're probably aware of the recent TV series, which was released to introduce a new generation of gamers to the franchise before the game arrives in a couple of years.
