CD Projekt Red (CDPR) today revealed their Q3 earnings report which was followed by a conference call where the company's heads provided more details on the current and upcoming projects including the next Witcher game codenamed Polaris.
In the official graph, CDPR revealed that their largest internal team is working on The Witcher Polaris project, which has over 330 developers at the moment and will grow to over 400 developers by mid-2024. "The [Polaris] team is steadily growing, having reached almost 330 developers at the end of last month. It's expected to grow over 400 by mid next year," they said.
Most of the developers who worked on Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty expansion are now slowly moving over to Polaris, which is now CD Projekt Red's main project until the game's release.
Sadly, we did not get additional details on The Witcher Polaris but it's safe to say that this is an encouraging update from CDPR. Now that the majority of CDPR's employees are focusing on this fantasy RPG, the development process should gain some traction and we may get the official teaser trailer or a proper announcement next year.
However, keep in mind that The Witcher Polaris project is not expected to launch anytime soon. If we had to guess, we'd say that 2025 is probably a realistic window for this one but don't be surprised if it slips into 2026.
The game will be CD Projekt Red's biggest title yet and such an ambitious project will take time. With The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt still being one of the greatest fantasy RPGs of all time, CDPR will probably want to set the bar for Western RPGs once again.
The Witcher 4 is being developed in Unreal Engine 5 and should be coming to PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
