The next Witcher game will still be an RPG but players can expect new things as CD Projekt Red want to push boundaries and discover new ways of storytelling.

The next Witcher game codenamed Polaris is still years away but CD Projekt Red have been sharing small updates on the development of the project in their quarterly earnings reports, confirming that the dev team is about to enter full production later this year.

In today's earnings conference call, CD Projekt Red also answered a couple of questions about this highly anticipated title and one of them was regarding the game's concept and how it compares to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

CD Projekt Red replied that Witcher 4 will be an RPG but players can expect to see some differences versus The Witcher 3. The studio say they are keen to push the boundaries and explore new ways of storytelling.

"The Witcher Polaris is still a role-playing game, however, there will be some changes versus The Witcher 3. We don't want to be stuck in the same spot. We always want to push the boundaries and discover new ways of telling the story. We want to move in the next direction so you may expect new things in the next Witcher game," CD Projekt Red said in an investor call.

This is something that probably every Witcher fan expected given that CD Projekt Red have grown significantly as a studio since the development of The Witcher 3. The Polish company is now one of the world's most renowned video game developers and it's not surprising at all that they want to set the bar for RPGs with their next epic fantasy title.

While I absolutely love The Witcher 3, the game has a couple of flaws, most notably when it comes to combat experience which feels a bit clunky and off, to be fair. Hopefully, the next Witcher game will look to improve on that. Oh, and a smooth release would be great, too. We certainly don't want another Cyberpunk 2077 launch fiasco.

In addition, CD Projekt Red also revealed that the dev team are feeling good about the development of the game on Unreal Engine 5 and have been working on their own tools specifically for Witcher Polaris.

CD Projekt Red have over 400 developers working on the game at the moment and that number is expected to increase once the project enters full production later this year.

The Witcher Polaris is expected to be revealed in the coming years.
