Blizzard Entertaiment boss Mike Ybarra has recently hinted that popular sci-fi franchise Starcraft could make a return if someone comes with the right idea and passion for the game.
The revival of the dormant IP is something that has been the major talking point within the Xbox community since Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard earlier this year.
Starcraft, as one of the most popular franchises in Blizzard's portfolio is an ideal candidate, hence why Ybarra had to answer some questions on the potential return of this real time strategy series.
When asked by Bloomberg what's the plan for all these franchises, Ybarra said he is open to possible return of older IPs including Starcraft. However, in order to bring Starcraft back to millions of fans across the world, Blizzard needs the right idea and passion. Ybarra was very clear that he won't simply go and tell someone to go and make a Starcraft game.
"It’s not me saying, 'Go make a StarCraft game,'" Ybarra said. "I need to have someone who has the vision and passion that comes with the idea, and I’ll bet on that team."
Ybarra even hinted that if Starcraft was to return, it could be an entirely different genre altogether, which sounds very exciting, to be honest.
Hardcore fans of Starcraft who just want a next-gen AAA real time strategy would probably be disappointed with such a scenario, though.
Obviously, it's going to take a while before we get the next Starcraft game, whatever it may be. Judging by Ybarra's words, there is no Starcraft game in development right now which means it going to take years before we get to see something Starcraft related.
However, there's always a chance that the project is under the veil of mystery and Blizzard simply want to have a major surprise for their fans, so that's why they are refusing to acknowledge that any Starcraft projects exist at the moment.
