A Call of Duty release for Nintendo Switch 2 could be closer than expected, with a new report claiming the first port is nearly ready.

A Call of Duty game may actually be on the way for Nintendo Switch 2, a new report claims. Windows Central's Jez Corden, who has remained one of the more reliable voices in tracking the process, recently made some intriguing new remarks on the subject.

As has long been known since Microsoft's Activision acquisition, Nintendo fans can certainly expect a future version of the franchise. The main issue has always been the sense of little to no actual progress.

Coupled with the launch of every new Call of Duty game for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, the wait for Nintendo Switch 2 has seen its fair share of skepticism. However, this new tidbit hints that it may actually be in more advanced development than many realized.

Why Call of Duty hasn’t arrived on Switch yet

The conversation re-emerged after analyst Tae Kim wondered why Call of Duty was not day one on Nintendo Switch 2 when Microsoft previously said the Xbox would be there for features and content parity.

Jez Corden clarified that it boiled down to a very simple reason.

In Corden’s words:

  • Developers needed official Switch 2 dev kits in order to start work on a port
  • The dev kits were not available early enough in the development cycle
  • This means active development was delayed instead of being canned completely

It was also mentioned that there’s always the question of whether modern Call of Duty games can really work on Nintendo hardware. Whether it’s with storage, performance or both, this is a concern that has followed the series for years due to just how big recent entries have become.

Development has already been ongoing for some time

The future of Call of Duty on Nintendo consoles isn’t uncharted territory. Leaks have previously indicated that:

  • Sledgehammer Games has had job postings that mention working on the Switch
  • One Senior Technical Artist listing specifically named Switch development
  • This occurred after Microsoft’s takeover of Activision

Combined, this coincides with Microsoft’s own expressed desire to bring Call of Duty to additional platforms, including Nintendo’s.

Which Call of Duty would come first?

The one major piece of this story that’s been left unaddressed is which Call of Duty would come first.

As things currently stand:

  • Black Ops 7 has no confirmed Switch 2 version in the works
  • Free-to-play could be a possibility like Call of Duty: Warzone
  • An older title or standalone release has also been thrown around

Microsoft may prefer to bring over a lower risk title and see how things perform and are received before giving future games full day-one parity.
