Blizzard just don't want to give up on a StarCraft shooter game. After two cancelled shooter projects in the StarCraft universe (Ghost and Ares), it seems the legendary development studio are willing to give it another go and try to make this game a reality.
This is according to a reliable Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, who recently released a new book called "Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future Of Blizzard Entertainment", where he mentions that Blizzard were incubating a Starcraft shooter a while back.
Schreier elaborated on that on the new episode of the IGN Unlocked podcast, where he stated that he's not certain if this project is still in the works as Blizzard traditionally cancel a lot of projects but at the time of writing the book, the game was in development.
Additionally, the StarCraft shooter project is being led by Dan Hay, who joined Blizzard from Ubisoft where he worked as an Executive Director for the iconic open-world shooter series Far Cry.
Other details about the project are unknown at the moment. If I had to guess, I'd say this shooter could be akin to Helldivers 2 or Space Marine series where you fight hordes of alien swarms with your squad and can customise your soldier's appearance and loadout.
It's possible that this was one of the projects that Microsoft greenlit after they acquired Blizzard. We know from some previous reports that Microsoft asked Activision Blizzard and their studios if they want to create a new game from one of the many Microsoft-owned IP, which includes StarCraft.
Hopefully, this project is still alive and in development as StarCraft shooter similar to Space Marine 2 or Helldivers 2 for example has the potential to be quite the hit for Microsoft. Fingers crossed!
