The Assassin's Creed series is laying the groundwork for a new modern-day narrative, in order to rebalance historical and modern-day storylines. During a recent BAFTA event, franchise director Marc-Alexis Coté spoke about how the modern storyline has changed over time, as it's often been one of the most divisive aspects of these games.
It was the combination of past and present conflicts that first made the series appeal to gamers, from Desmond Miles' journey in the older Assassin's Creed games. Since the conclusion of Desmond's story in Assassin's Creed 3, however, the modern-day plot, including Assassin's Creed Shadows, has struggled to resonate just the same.
Over time, this narrative focus shifted toward things like Pieces of Eden, and the storyline grew much more predictable, completely disconnected from the central historical themes.
Coté acknowledged the problem of having this repetitive artifact chase make the modern-day storyline disjointed and overly complex, alienating new entrants from the lore of the franchise.
Coté iterated that Assassin's Creed Shadows will set a new direction when modern stories have to enhance the historical plotlines rather than detract from them.
The new course will deal with "memory, identity and autonomy" regarding how history shapes the identity of a person and also general society control.
He repeated that what they want is to use historical contrast in order to make comments about modern issues: free will, control, and also knowledge value.
This new course will be laid with the foundation when Assassin's Creed Shadows releases on February 14, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It provides a starting point for future narrative arcs in the series.
