Speaking to Game Developer, CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michal Nowakowski confirmed that The Witcher 4 is playable across every platform it's targeting, right now, in its current state of development.
Nowakowski was direct about it: "You come to the studio, you launch Witcher 4 right now. You can launch it on PC. You can launch it on PS5. You can launch it on Xbox Series X, and it's going to run."
That's certainly a different story when compared to CD Projekt Red's most recent big game - Cyberpunk 2077 - which launched in a barely playable state. It's clearly a deliberate shift in how the studio is approaching this project and that's certainly good news for all of us Witcher fans.
A direct response to Cyberpunk 2077's launch problems
In case you're unfamiliar, Cyberpunk 2077's troubled 2020 launch, including its removal from the PlayStation Store, was rooted in a PC-first development approach that left console versions badly under-tested until late in the process.
Nowakowski explained that the team was chasing the best possible visuals on PC as the lead platform, treating it as the ideal rig for pushing cinematic fidelity, under the mistaken assumption that scaling that down to current-gen consoles wouldn't be a major hurdle. That assumption turned out to be badly wrong, and CD Projekt Red are clearly building The Witcher 4 with all platforms in mind from a much earlier stage this time round.
The Witcher 4 is confirmed for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, though no release date has been announced yet. It is targeting 2028, but that's a wide window and it remains to be seen if the game hits it.
