The role-playing game genre (RPG) is one of the most popular among gamers. Every year, tonnes of RPGs try to earn their places under the sun, and this year won't be an exception. Here are the most anticipated ones we're looking to play in 2025.

No video game genre quite nails the video game experience like RPGs, which bring a sense of immersion unlike any other.

RPGs will make you feel part of the game world as your actions will influence the outcomes, your hard work to gain XP and make yourself stronger for those big boss fights will bring so much satisfaction.

Additionally, no other genre will let you build your character to replicate your own personality; all this and much more can be found playing RPGs, and that's why we all love them that much.

Some RPG franchises have been alive for more than three decades, and they are still very popular, like the Diablo series, for example. There's no shortage of new IPs as well, especially in the upcoming year when we are expecting many new RPGs that promise to deliver unique experiences.

On paper, 2025 is set to be a spectacular year for RPG fans, with over a dozen big AAA releases across various platforms. In this article, we'll go through some of the biggest titles in 2025, bringing you key details, trailers, release dates and more info you need to know.

The Most Anticipated RPGs of 2025

  1. Dying Light: The Beast
  2. Phantom Blade Zero
  3. Kingdom Come Deliverance 2
  4. Fable
  5. Assassin’s Creed: Shadows
  6. Ghost of Yotei
  7. Avowed
  8. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers
  9. Dynasty Warriors: Origins
  10. Elden Ring: Nightreign
  11. Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth
  12. Outer Worlds 2
  13. Crimson Desert
  14. Lost Soul Aside
  15. Monster Hunter Wilds

 1. Dying Light: The Beast

In this not-so-classic RPG, we will jump into the boots of Kyle Crane again, ten years after the outbreak. If you played the previous two titles, you'll know that Crane became more than just a man in his adventures, and now he is on a vengeance mission to pay back everyone who did him wrong.

Dying Light: The Beast is set in a huge, zombie-infested open world and can be played solo or in a four-player co-op. You will be able to select from a wide variety of firearms but also craft your own melee weapons to bash the braindead creatures. If you like parkour and zombie games, look no further than Dying Light: The Beast.

2.  Phantom Blade Zero

  • Developer: S-Game
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, PC
  • Release date: Fall 2025

Phantom Blade Zero is a cinematic action RPG with fast and dynamic combat that mixes Chinese martial arts and a steampunk aesthetic.

It features a dark art style and aims to deliver spectacular fighting sequences that look more like setpieces from a Hollywood film than a video game.

Interestingly, it's not a souls-like, even though it looks like one. Think of it more like a hack-and-slash title where you can unleash devastating combos and defeat enemies in mere seconds if you know what you're doing.

3. Kingdom Come Deliverance 2

  • Developer: Warhorse Studios
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
  • Release date: February 11, 2025

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is one of the most unique RPGs on this list thanks to its incredible attention to detail and realistic presentation of Medieval Europe, more precisely Bohemia.

RELATED:

We still play as Henry in this sequel but our hero is no longer an ordinary peasant lad. He's a trusted member of the rightful king’s allies and gets tasked with an important quest that goes sideways.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is taking everything the original did and cranks it up a couple of notches. That includes spectacular visuals, the open-world size, the NPC simulation and all those realistic mechanics that we fell in love with years ago.

4. Fable

  • Developer: Playground Games
  • Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PC
  • Release date: 2025

The older gamers among us probably remember the original Fable games that made the Xbox 360 system so popular back in the day. This franchise was one of the staples of Microsoft's early gaming days and it's beloved by many fans worldwide for its unique presentation and humour so it's only logical that we're getting a Fable reboot in 2025.

RELATED:

Fable is developed by a Forza developer Playground, which some may find odd but the studio staffed up for this one, hiring people that worked on The Witcher 3, Baldur's Gate 3 and Dishonored to name a few so it's safe to say that Fable is in good hands.

The game is an action RPG with swordfight and magic where you can create your own character and where your choices can have an impact on the world and the story so choose wisely. Playground promise a big story, plenty of giants and a vast open world to explore.

5. Assassin’s Creed: Shadows

  • Developer: Ubisoft
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
  • Release date: February 14, 2025

There was a time when Assassin's Creed titles were action-adventure titles with stealth mechanics but with no, or very little, RPG elements. The latest titles in the series change the approach, so today's Assassin's Creed games are true RPGs with all the benefits of this genre.

The latest instalment in the series, Assassin's Creed Mirage, returned to the origins and introduced a bit more classic approach, but with the upcoming Shadows, RPG comes back in style, with everything a true RPG title has to offer.

RELATED:

Assassin's Creed: Shadows will let us play as assassins from feudal Japan. One protagonist will be a skilful samurai and the other a stealthy ninja, and in this way, we will have the opportunity to try two different playstyles.

Assassin's Creed Shadows will be the first true next-gen Assassin's Creed game so expect major improvements across all departments.

 6. Ghost of Yōtei

Ghost of Yōtei is a thematic sequel to Sucker Punch's critically acclaimed action-adventure RPG Ghost of Tsushima. The sequel introduces a new protagonist, a female called Atsu who embarks on her own journey, filled with difficult challenges.

We will also get to explore a new region in Japan, more precisely the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, which is rich with sprawling grasslands and snowy tundras among other gorgeous biomes.

RELATED:

Sucker Punch promise new and improved gameplay mechanics, better open-world design and meaningful side quests to complete.

We expect to see more of Ghost of Yōtei in the coming months.

7. Avowed

Avowed is a classic fantasy RPG that will definitely scratch any RPG itch you have with its first-person melee combat, use of magic, and everything you might expect from one such title. It's set in the Pillars of Eternity universe and features a vibrant and unique art style with distinct open zones instead of a traditional open world.

RELATED:

The character you make will be a part of an expedition sent to a distant land to investigate a plague. But once the team arrives and they start to investigate, they will realise that things are not as they're supposed to be.

As in a true RPG manner, you'll do quests, gain experience, and build your character according to your preferences. We feel that this game could be a true gem, but let's not get ahead of ourselves and wait a couple of months more to actually play it.

 8. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers

  • Developer: 505 Games
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
  • Release date: 2025

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is one more Souls-like RPG set in a cursed version of the Ming Dynasty. In this one, you play as a female pirate who finds herself inside a mysterious world where the abovementioned curse is affecting people by turning them into monsters. However, our protagonist only loses her memories but gains special powers in return. Quite an interesting premise.

In a true Souls-like fashion, you'll hone your skills, kill bosses, and progress through the story to regain your lost memories and find out what's wrong with the Kingdom in the process.

9. Dynasty Warriors: Origins

  • Developer: Koei Tecmo Games
  • Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S
  • Release date: January 17, 2025

Dynasty Warrior: Origins is one more chapter in the well-known Dynasty Warriors franchise, and just like its predecessors, it follows the story based on the Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

When it comes to gameplay in this game, you're up for RPG mechanics paired with very fast-paced combat and Soulslike elements that make this game very hard and challenging. Given that it's one of the RPGs that is right around the corner, we are very excited to get our hands on Koei Tecmo's title.

10. Elden Ring: Nightreign

  • Developer: From Software
  • Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC
  • Release date: 2025

During this year's Game Awards, out of the blue sky, From Software announced the Elden Ring spinoff called Elden Ring Nightreign. We were really taken by surprise by this one since Nightreign is not the type of game FromSoftware are known for.

Elden Ring: Nightreign will take place inside the alternate version of Limgrave, the opening area of Elden Ring, and will be the co-op game featuring up to three players that team up together for three in-game days where their main goal will be to explore, gear up and become stronger to fight big bosses.

RELATED: Elden Ring Nightreign is a co-op survival game I didn't even know I wanted

Elden Ring: Nightreign will show some similarities to the other two genres, Battle Royal, because the area where they play will shrink as time passes, and Roguelike because once you beat an underboss after each day, that area will reset. If one of you dies, you'll have to restart anew.

The game can also be played solo but not in two-player co-op which is a bit odd.

11. Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth

  • Developer: Square Enix
  • Platforms: PC
  • Release date: January 23, 2025

After almost a full year of exclusivity on the PlayStation 5, Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth will find its place on our PCs at the very beginning of 2025, or on January 23, 2025, to be more precise.

Story and gameplay-wise, it is the same game as the one released a year ago, the only difference is, of course, better graphics on the most powerful gaming system, the PC. If you’re a proud owner of a strong PC, you can expect much better lighting and shadow effects on the PC version, along with more detailed world and facial animations.

 12. The Outer Worlds 2

  • Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
  • Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PC
  • Release date: 2025

We're wondering: How do they do it? Obsidian Entertainment. How do they manage to produce and publish not one, but two major RPGs in 2025? After Avowed which will come early in 2025, The Outer World 2 is another big RPG title from Obsidian which we will play in 2025.

After the success of Outer World, the sequel will be twice as big and twice as good, according to the hilarious narrator in the official trailer. Prepare for more fun and more shooting as it seems that everything we've loved in the first game will be here as well, only on a bigger scale.

Outer World 2 will be released during 2025 without a specific release date for Xbox Series X|S and PC, and as is the custom for all Xbox games, it will be available on Game Pass from day one.

13. Crimson Desert

  • Developer: Pearl Abyss
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC
  • Release date: Late 2025

Crimson Desert is set to be released in late 2025 and is yet another RPG with a medieval, dark fantasy setting. The plot takes place on a continent called Piwel, where the main character, Kliff, apart from his many enemies, must fight his own demons and struggle with all the problems brought to him by the burden of leadership.

Even though Crimson Desert was first planned to be an online game, the development took a different turn and the developers started working on a complete single-player player game that is labelled as an action-adventure with RPG elements.

What sets this one apart from most of the other RPGs on this list is the ambition and scope. Crimson Desert looks huge with so many gameplay mechanics and systems set in a breathtaking vast open world.

It's one of our most anticipated games of 2025.

14. Lost Soul Aside

  • Developer: Ultizero Games
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5 and PC
  • Release date: 2025

Lost Soul Aside is a Japanese-style action RPG which is finally coming next year after more than a decade of development.

The game draws heavy inspiration from Final Fantasy and Devil May Cry titles; it is very evident, mostly by the very fast-paced combat-styled gameplay and, of course, by the overall design.

RELATED:

According to the official announcement, you will play a hero who is set on a journey to save his sister and, along with her, the entire world from dangerous creatures who threaten to destroy life on the planet. Lost Soul Aside will be out in 2025 for PlayStation 5 and PC.

15. Monster Hunter Wilds

  • Developer: Capcom
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
  • Release date: February, 28

We'll finish this list with another highly anticipated RPG of 2025. Monster Hunter Wilds promises to be a true spectacle filled with breathtaking monsters and stunning locations where we'll get to grind for that next armour piece or weapon for hundreds of hours.

Capcom say players can expect dynamic and changing environments and the evolution of their action system for even more epic encounters.

The thing with Monster Hunter games is that we always get so excited because all of them look so fun and good but we're suddenly struck by the realisation that we don't have the time to invest in these epic RPGs.

Hopefully, Wilds won't be that grindy.

And that concludes our list of most anticipated RPGs in 2025, for now. We will be updating the article with new releases, information and trailers as publishers announce more RPGs for 2025.
