Archetype Entertainment have finally given us some raw gameplay from their upcoming third-person sci-fi shooter RPG Exodus, which was first revealed at The Game Awards in 2023.
If you followed the game closely since that reveal, you probably know that this one has a strong Mass Effect vibe to it, which is not surprising, the Archetype team is formed by ex-Bioware devs after all.
The trailer does a pretty great job of showcasing some of the alien locations we'll visit but it's also pretty much combat-focused, which is not what I expected, given that Exodus' biggest selling point seems to be a big sci-fi story and choice and consequence rather than raw shooting.
Luckily, the dev team sat down with popular streamer Coh after the trailer went live, to discuss everything about the game, providing exciting new details about the story, characters and how players can shape their own path on this epic journey. Check some of those details below.
Exodus story, companions, gameplay details and more
Here are some details on Exodus that Archetype Entertainment shared on the livestream with Coh.
- Action RPG with dialogue choices, companions both human and alien, skill trees, etc
- Play as "Jun", who the team describes as sort of a mix between Indiana Jones and Paul Atriedes
- You can customize your character, male or female and the choices you make in the game define you
- There are structured quests as well as areas you can explore, similar to KOTOR, Mass Effect and Dragon Age Origins.
- You decide the manner in which you do quests
- You go on quests to retrieve Celestial technology, and depending on what you decide to do with that tech (help your society, advance militarily, etc), the game world can change drastically
- Some choices you make with the Celestial tech can open up entirely different weapons and technology
- A large cast of companions joins you, and you bring two along with you on quests like in Mass Effect
- Romances confirmed to be in the game
- Some companions "will be at each other's throats", and you'll have to side with some over others
- Some companions can change "radically" depending on choices you make, for example through time dilation: leaving companions behind may change them, age them by the time you come back

New Exodus screenshots
Overall, the game looks pretty good but I'm not really convinced by some of the character designs. I'm not entirely sure why they haven't clicked with me, perhaps it's because I'm getting weird "random Unreal Engine 5 people" vibes here but I'll definitely wait for more footage to see if the dev team brings some improvements here.
As for the actual RPG mechanics, I'm trying to keep my hype in check but everything Archetype said so far is right up my alley. This indeed feels like a Mass Effect game us Mass Effect fans deserve.
Exodus does not have a release date at the moment but we know it's coming to PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
