Avowed biomes: List of every region we've seen so far

Obsidian's RPG Avowed comes with various open zones, each with its own unique biome. In this preview, we look at every region the devs revealed so far and what makes them interesting.

Avowed is a hot topic for Xbox fans at the moment, mostly due to the game's recent previews, which gave us a whole slate of information and new gameplay footage from this highly-anticipated title.

In case you're unfamiliar with Avowed, it's Obsidian Entertainment's take on the first-person fantasy RPG genre, similar to how The Outer Worlds was their take on something like Fallout.

Avowed is not an open-world game though, so it should not be compared to Skyrim. Instead, we're getting large open zones to explore, as we progress through the story. So far, we've seen several of these zones and even have a first look at the game's map thanks to the recent previews. Check it out below.

The exact number of regions is yet to be officially confirmed but as it stands, we'll get to explore at least four major regions. That's the number of zones we've seen in the trailers so far but obviously, it could be more since Obsidian probably didn't show everything just yet.

So let's check out each of these regions and dive into detail on what makes them unique.

List of Avowed regions

  1. Dawnshore
  2. Emerald Stair
  3. Shatterscarp
  4. Galawain's Tusks

1. Dawnshore

Dawnshore is the first region you'll visit in Avowed

Dawnshore is the first region you'll visit in Avowed. It is quite big with a massive coastal city called Paradis in the heart of it and various cave systems, forests and mountain paths you can discover while exploring.

From the recent previews, we've found out that it's absolutely packed with details and handcrafted locations. It also has a handful of side quests and boss fights so it looks like a great starting area for players to get a hold of Avowed's systems.

Some of the enemies we've seen in Dawnshore include infected animals like bears, spiders, wizard skeletons and lizard-like creatures called Xaurips.

Visually, Dawnshore looks quite stunning, with a vibrant art style and gorgeous lush nature that really makes the graphics pop.

It will take you around 15 hours to complete everything in Dawnshore before you venture into Emerald Stair, which is the next region we'll visit in Obsidian's RPG.

2. Emerald Stair

Avowed's second region called Emerald Stair is particularly stunning at night

As spotted on the Avowed map in Force Gaming's video, we will be able to go to Emerald Stair directly from Dawnshore. This second region in Avowed looks quite stunning during the night. We've first seen it five months ago when Obsidian and Xbox released new gameplay footage, showcasing combat against small mushroom-like creatures.

Just like Dawnshore, Emerald Stair looks quite big as you can see in the screenshot above and presumably packed with various things to do. Obsidian describe this region as an "enclave of animancers" who study this essence that makes souls and this will be one part of the story that players will get to discover in Emerald Stair.

It's also evident from the footage that this region too has a major city called Fior where we'll get to meet NPCs, and vendors and potentially find various quests.

3. Shatterscarp

Shatterscarp is a massive desert region in Avowed

Shatterscarp is a massive desert region in Avowed that we'll get to visit after completing the story bits in Emerald Stair. It consists of several sub-biomes like rocky canyons and large sweeping deserts but it's not all dull and desolate in this one. From the footage we've seen so far, there will be some gorgeous oases and grottos to visit and even take a swim to battle off the scorching heat.

It's also a very vertical area with a lot of high rock formations for players to climb and potentially find secrets and loot.

Other than that, little is known about Shatterscarp, but Obsidian revealed that this region is home to a settlement called Thirdborn. We'll also see stronger effects of the plague called Dreamscorge in Shatterscarp and there's a mysterious mage somewhere in the region that created a frozen labyrinth which I'm really excited to explore.

4. Galawain's Tusks

Obsidian

Galawain's Tusks biome in Avowed is a mountainous region with volcanoes and rocky terrain

Galawain's Tusks is a volcanic region that opens up after Shatterscarp. We haven't seen much of this one in the gameplay footage so far which suggests it's one of the late game regions. Screenshots reveal that Galawain's Tusks is made up of volcanic rocks and has an active volcano in the background.

This is another place with overgrown mushrooms, a theme that can be found through all Avowed regions by the looks of it. There are several distinct locations in Galawain's Tusks including an army settlement, a large keep and a God shrine.

What exactly will be the player's job in this region it remains to be seen but frankly, it's the one that's least appealing to me in terms of art style and natural beauty.

And that's pretty much everything we've seen so far from Avowed in terms of regions. It's unclear whether the game has more regions that Obsidian are keeping under wraps. The official map you've seen above clearly hints at more regions, especially the snowy one on the top of the map but so far, we don't have anything official that confirms more than four regions.

Avowed is coming on February 18, 2025, to PC and Xbox Series X|S. The game will also release on day one on Xbox Game Pass.
