The search for a new Kratos appears to be moving quickly. Following the confirmation last month that Ryan Hurst would not continue in the role after suffering a torn bicep on set, Dave Bautista is in active talks to take over as the God Of War series' lead for Prime Video. No deal has been signed yet, but discussions are described as ongoing.
Bautista is a credible fit on paper. At 57, the former WWE Champion and long-time Guardians of the Galaxy actor brings both the physical presence and the acting range the role demands. Kratos, particularly in the 2018 and 2023 games the series adapts, requires someone who can carry the weight of a deeply emotional father-son story while also being convincing as a literal god of war.
Bautista has demonstrated both in films like Dune and Stuber, and his action credentials are extensive. He has previously spoken publicly about his desire to take on more dramatic roles, and the God of War series would represent one of the most high-profile television projects currently in production.
The situation with Hurst was unfortunate. Four episodes had already been filmed before the injury halted production in late June, and those will need to be reshot with whichever actor ultimately takes the role. Production is expected to resume in mid-October once the new casting is finalised, meaning the delay is significant but not catastrophic for the show's timeline. The rest of the confirmed cast remains in place: Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Ed Skrein as Baldur, and Alastair Duncan returning as Mimir from the games. No release date for the series has been announced by Prime Video.
