Marvel's Wolverine has received its official ESRB rating ahead of its 15 September 2026 launch, and Insomniac Games is clearly not holding back. The game has been rated Mature 17+ with the following content descriptors: Blood and Gore, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, and Strong Language. It also carries an In-Game Purchases label, confirming post-launch monetisation in some form.
The full ESRB summary leaves very little to the imagination. Players use Wolverine's claws to slash, stab, and slice enemies, with rage modes enabling faster combo strings and slow-motion finishers that the board specifically describes as dramatically stabbing enemies in the head. Combat is accompanied by frequent blood-splatter effects and screams of pain, and both dismemberment and decapitation feature.
Battlefields are described as being "sometimes strewn with torsos and limbs", and cutscenes take it further still, depicting characters tearing enemies apart and decapitating soldiers. Several sequences briefly show a character's exposed buttocks. The dialogue includes a direct reference to fentanyl production. The words "f**k" and "sh*t" appear throughout.
None of this is entirely surprising given Wolverine's character. Logan has always been the Marvel character most naturally suited to this kind of visceral, unrestrained violence, and Insomniac teased from early on that this would be a darker game than anything in the Spider-Man series. The SDCC story trailer two weeks ago confirmed The Hand, Omega Red, and Bolivar Trask as antagonists, and the tone throughout has been noticeably grimmer than the studio's previous work. Whether the In-Game Purchases label refers to cosmetic DLC, a season pass, or something else has not been clarified. Marvel's Wolverine launches exclusively on PlayStation 5 on 15 September 2026.
