As soon as you begin your journey in Crimson Desert, a highly popular open-world action RPG from Pearl Abyss, you'll be given a horse on whose back you'll reach the first town. However, this mare called Herspia, even though she is your first companion and you might have some sentiments toward her, is a very limited mount with very low stats, so it is just natural to be on the market for a better horse.
Apart from the ability to buy the horses from the stables, you'll be able to tame the wild ones found all over the game's huge world as well, and given the price you'll have to pay for a brand-new horse, taming will definitely be a better option.
However, given the size of the world in Crimson Desert, it is almost impossible to stumble upon such a good horse as we did (the legendary horse, no less) and so early in the game, and good-willed as we are, we are ready to share his location with you, along with a couple of tips on how to tame this beauty of a horse.
Where to Find the Legendary Horse
We're not sure if there are any other legendary horses in the game; we found only this one, but given his stats and the amount of stamina he possesses, we doubt there's a better one out there. In any case, the name of this horse is Royler, and you can find it very early in the game, almost at the very beginning, but some prerequisites will be due if you want to be able to make Royler your noble steed.
Royler is located a bit north from Hernand, but before you decide to head there, it would be wise to finish at least the first chapter, which will give you several Abyss artefacts required for the necessary upgrades.
Once you have enough Abyss artefacts, open your map and mark the place shown on the map below. The place you're looking for is a small camp called Snowgrass Heart, located in southern Pauline. Look at the map and see a small lake just below the big P; mark that lake and make your way there.
If you head to Snowgrass Heart from Hernard, you'll have to travel around 2 km, but since the terrain is quite harsh, you'll be walking a lot, so this journey can take a bit of your time. Also, make sure to avoid enemy placements, because you're not ready to face those enemies if you're still early in the game; if not, then do it however you want.
You should also be informed that this lake is located inside the snowy area, so if you have some warm clothes, those could be useful; if not, taming Royler will still be manageable. Once you reach the lake, be sure to save the game manually, and the hunt for Royler can start.
How to Recognise Royler
Once you reach the lakeside camp, you'll see four horses standing in the snow. Observe them well; the white horse among them is Royler, and only he is a legendary horse; the others are just usual horses. You can sneak up on them or just sprint towards them; any method is legitimate. Once you reach Royler, press the Square/X button (consoles) or E (PC), and the mini-game of taming a horse will commence.
How to Tame Royler
Taming a horse can be very confusing since the game, for some reason, doesn't tell you how to do it at all; you're going to have to figure that out on your own or follow our guide, of course. In any case, once you hop on horseback, the horse will try to throw you off.
You'll see a lasso symbol in the middle of the screen that starts halfway full, and as the horse rears up, it will decrease. Your goal is to fill the entire lasso, and once you do, the horse is tamed – simple as that, if only.
To fill up the lasso symbol, you're going to have to hold the left stick on your controller or the directional keys on the keyboard in the opposite direction of where the horse is headed. Seems simple enough, right? Well, it isn't, because the horse doesn't stay still and Royler even less so, and it is a real small nightmare to manage to keep the controls in the opposite direction.
On top of all that, the place where you're trying to tame Royler is full of snow, and Royler is white, so it is very hard to recognise the direction he is heading in. Also, as we mentioned before, this place is inside the snowy area, and if you're cold in this game, your stamina depletes way faster, and if stamina is depleted, you'll fall off the horse.
Nothing seems to work to your advantage here, and why should it? If you manage to tame Royler, you're getting one of the best horses in the game, so some hard work is in order here.
To solve this problem, you'll have to invest all your Abyss artefacts into the stamina upgrades. If you've already invested some points in the other categories, you can respec for the cost of one Faded Abyss artefact. Go inside the skills menu and upgrade the stamina by investing the upgrade points in the blue wolf icon on top of the skill tree.
Now, with the stamina upgraded, hop on Royler's back and do whatever it takes to tame him. If you're failing, do not worry; we failed too more than we're ready to accept. It took us around half an hour to finally tame Royler, but once we did, it all paid off because this horse is the real beast.
