It looks like Microsoft is gearing up for another big Xbox Game Pass overhaul. A new report from the Financial Times claims Microsoft could introduce a cheaper Xbox Game Pass tier that focuses solely on first-party games.
Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma recently said that Game Pass was “too expensive for players” which seems to be the impetus for this change. Game Pass has always been marketed as one of gaming’s best values, so this represents a significant shift in messaging.
Details on the new, rumoured tier are slim so far, but it appears as if Xbox Game Studios titles would be exclusive to it, removing third-party games from the equation. This comes after some datamined documents earlier this year showed similar potential games that could be included in the subscription.
Titles listed included Halo 5: Guardians, Gears 5, Fallout 4, and DOOM Eternal, amongst others. This could massively help with pricing if true, as even though it would only contain first-party Xbox Game Studios titles, they would all be massively popular games.
Naturally, it would be a shame to not have any third-party titles as part of Game Pass, as that has been one of its major appeals. Having day-one releases as part of the service has been a huge plus.
Microsoft also appears to be shaking up the service as a whole, though. According to more reports, they have been having discussions about allowing players to “toggle” between subscriptions.
Pricing would change over the years, as well as adding/removing tiers. There’s even rumours of them bundling the subscription with Netflix in order to provide more value.
It’s unknown if any of this will come to fruition, but it’s safe to say Microsoft is reevaluating Game Pass for the future. If they do decide to move forward with some (or all) of these changes, players will hopefully have more options when it comes to accessibility.
