Xbox may delay or stop releasing new Call of Duty games on Game Pass day-one

Xbox is reportedly considering removing day one Call of Duty releases from Game Pass, raising questions about its subscription strategy.

Xbox Game Pass subscribers may have to wait longer for new Call of Duty games to arrive on the service. This comes after Xbox added Call of Duty games to Game Pass earlier this year once Microsoft completed their takeover of Activision Blizzard back in 2023.

Recent games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 came day and date with a Game Pass release, which was seen as a trial run to see if subscription gaming could work in the long run. Reportedly, Xbox could reverse course this year and leave Call of Duty off of Game Pass when new games arrive in 2024.

Jez Corden said during a livestream that Xbox would potentially drop COD games from Game Pass day and date releases this year. While we still do not have any concrete information about these future titles, Xbox’s decisions around Call of Duty will be interesting to see as they continue to shuffle executives around after Phil Spencer reportedly left the company.

COD Games have also been put on a pedestal for Xbox’s Game Pass service. Earlier this year, Insider Christopher Dring said that Call of Duty is “the ultimate litmus test for whether subscriptions can keep growing,” implying that these games would need to help with Game Pass subscriber growth.

Financial reasons could also play a factor here. While placing major titles like Call of Duty on Game Pass will help with user engagement, it hurts sales of new games. In addition, budgeting for such huge releases may decrease the funds Xbox can put towards other gaming content.

Since other games help with player retention on Game Pass, this could be detrimental moving forward. On the flip side, taking day-one Game Pass launches away from players who signed up for the service to play those games could hurt the service.

We’ll have to wait and see if there is any truth to this rumour, but it’ll be interesting to see what Microsoft decides to do.
