Patch 8.11 is just around the horizon

Riot Games showcased a prototype of an in-game replay system for Valorant and explained the reasons behind its delayed release in a developer update video.

Valorant players have been eagerly awaiting a replay system since the game's launch, hoping for a feature similar to Valve’s Counter-Strike. The developers have been mostly quiet on this front, assuring players that the system is in the works but challenging to implement.

In a dev update on May 21, Valorant’s Tech Lead, Marcus Reid, showcased an early prototype of the replay system. The video displayed a free camera and player POV from a recorded custom match, along with a basic interface featuring simple recording controls like pause and play. Reid emphasized that the build is far from complete and highlighted some challenges the team is addressing.

Current Whereabouts of the Valorant Replay System

Reid stated that: “For instance, during a replay, time might be paused, and players may want to view a specific round. While Unreal provides many replay features, we didn’t anticipate these scenarios initially. Numerous issues with maps, abilities, weapons, and visual and audio effects need to be resolved for replays to function correctly.

He also showed clips from the current replay system version, showing doors floating in the air and Brimstone smokes not displaying properly, contrasting these with live gameplay footage. He pointed out that these clips represent only a few defects among thousands of individual assets in Valorant, all of which must be audited and potentially adjusted for replays. Reid concluded by stating, “We’re taking our time to ensure we get it right,”

In a press conference before the Grand Finals of VCT Masters Madrid, Valorant's head, Anna Donlon, reassured players that a replay system is in development but did not commit to a release date.

Donlon did not elaborate on the complexities of adding this feature. Since Valorant's release, Riot Games has consistently promised the much-requested replay system, though its prolonged development has tested some fans' patience. Donlon also mentioned that the developer will provide more updates on the system's progress in the future to keep players informed.
