Paradox Interactive, Iceflake Studios and the LEGO Group have announced LEGO Skylines, a new city builder that lets players design and grow their own LEGO metropolis, brick by brick.

Paradox Interactive, Iceflake Studios and the LEGO Group have unveiled LEGO Skylines at gamescom Opening Night Live, a new city-building game set in a fully LEGO-ified world. For LEGO heads, including myself, this is probably the game that consumes our souls.

LEGO Skylines starts players off with one plot and a first house, growing that into a full neighbourhood and eventually a sprawling city shaped entirely by player decisions. The basics come first: roads, electricity, food and water, before players move on to the things that make a city feel alive: homes, parks, quirky shops, hospitals, museums and sports arenas.

Iceflake say the aim is a city builder where players can chase whatever vision they want, whether that's a bustling downtown or a quiet seaside town, with a large selection of customisable plots, buildings and LEGO decorations to work with.

A serious city builder wearing a LEGO skin

Iceflake Studios, best known for the management and simulation genre, say they're leaning on years of experience in that space rather than treating this as a novelty LEGO spin-off. Co-founder and Game Director Lasse Liljedahl said the team grew up building LEGO sets themselves and wanted to combine that with what they've learned building deep simulation games, aiming for something more personal than a typical city builder.

The LEGO Group's Fredrik Löving echoed that ambition, stating the goal from the outset wasn't just to make a LEGO city builder, but one that stands among the best the genre has to offer.
