Metro 2039 received a new trailer at Gamescom Opening Night Live, showcasing its dark post-apocalyptic world ahead of its February 2027 release.

Metro 2039 got a new trailer on Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026, providing fans with yet another look at 4A Games’ return to the post-apocalyptic world of Metro. The gameplay showcased mainly features the game’s heavy atmosphere and detailed environments, but it also offers glimpses of the games harsh combat.

Fans of the series know that Moscow is a central hub for the majority of the games. Metro Exodus was the last mainline entry, released all the way back in 2019, so it’s no surprise that players will return to the Russian city in 2039.

Here’s what we can expect from Metro 2039:

  • Hyper-detailed post-apocalyptic Moscow
  • Gritty, realistic combat
  • Improved visuals and environments
  • Dark atmosphere
  • Playable voiced protagonist
  • Story focused around a new character: The Stranger

While the gameplay does a good job showcasing the game’s graphical improvements, there’s a lot more to 2039 than just visuals. Just like the previous entries, the atmosphere in 2039 is palpable.

The Protagonist Is Voice acted for the First Time

Unlike previous entries, players will not be playing as series veteran Artyom. Instead, 2039 introduces a new playable character known as The Stranger.

The Stranger is a Spartan that has been living in exile from the Metro. Something causes him to return to Moscow, and players take control of him as he faces his past and challenges of the hostile present.

While it’s sad to see that we won’t be reacquainting with Artyom, it’s great that 4A Games decided to introduce a new protagonist rather than reuse old assets. At least players will still get to enjoy the haunting atmosphere they’ve come to love.

Metro 2039 will release in February 2027.
