Nvidia cuts support for Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta architecture-based GPUs

With the next Nvidia driver update, two in the top 20 Nvidia cards among Steam users, the GTX 1060 and GTX 1050 Ti, will lose driver support, meaning no new drivers will be made for them.

One of the two most popular GPU producers, Nvidia, has announced that they will cut their driver support for the three GPU architectures, Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta. Now, many will say that this is nothing unusual because it is the usual practice to cut support for the older products, right?

Well, in the case of Nvidia GPUs, this might pose a slight problem. Nvidia GTX 10 series (Pascal architecture) has two GPUs (GTX 1060 and GTX 1050 Ti) that, according to the Steam surveys, around 4 per cent of users are still using, and if Nvidia cut the driver support for these cards, there's only one solution to this problem: many players will have to put their hands in their pockets and spend some money, sending their old GPUs into well-deserved retirement.

Those numbers might seem like nothing special, but if you do the calculation right and put the current number of Steam users (132 million) and extract this percentage, you'll get the imposing number of almost 3 million people that use those video cards.

For more reference, the most popular Nvidia GPU among Steam users, the Nvidia RTX 3060, is used by 4.73 per cent of players, which makes those two cards (GTX 1060 and GTX 1050 Ti) definitely among the most popular on Steam. Now, will this news make the owners of those cards angry, or will they finally give up peacefully and send their beloved cards to retirement? It remains to be seen in the days to come.
