Sony has confirmed plans for another PlayStation Plus Essential subscription price increase. Pricing changes are set to go live May 20, 2026, for new customers.
Existing subscribers within select countries will be grandfathered in for the time being until they change their status or allow their subscriptions to lapse.
Going forward, Essential will cost members $10.99 per month up from $9.99. Subscribers will also pay $27.99 every three months instead of $24.99. European and U.K. prices are increasing as well, going up to €9.99 and £7.99 per month respectively.
Sony has clarified that current subscribers within select countries won’t be affected by the price change immediately. This includes countries like India and Turkey.
Subscribers who upgrade/change their plan or let their subscriptions expire will be subject to the increased prices. PlayStation Plus Extra and PlayStation Plus Premium prices have not changed. Sony has also not indicated any plans for an increase to Plus Extra or Premium either.
However, many are wondering if Sony has any plans to increase those prices later in the year. The price increase also comes as Sony and Microsoft are in a fierce battle over Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus.
Microsoft made changes to some of its Game Pass tiers recently after upping subscription prices across the board last year.Sony’s Plus Essential tier is popular for the sole reason that players get access to online multiplayer.
Access to free games every month, cloud storage, and member discounts are another bonus. Sony could be looking to capitalize on the service’s popularity by slowly increasing the price. Players who want to subscribe to PlayStation Plus Essential after May 20 will be locked into the new price going forward.
