Marathon Season 2 will add experimental PvE and PvP-Lite modes
Marathon Season 2 will introduce two experimental modes: one PvE-focused with light PvP elements, and one fully PvE cooperative experience

Key Points from the Article

  • The PvE-only mode allows crews to complete objectives and progress without interference from other players, potentially attracting casual players who find the PvPvE formula too challenging
  • The lighter PvP mode aims to find a middle ground by reducing player-counterplay while maintaining stakes, possibly having more long-term impact than the full PvE option
  • Both experimental playlists could significantly change how Marathon is played in the future based on player reception
  • These modes represent Bungie's strongest indication that they are considering post-launch changes to Marathon's core formula

Bungie has confirmed two experimental Marathon Season 2 modes, including a PvE-only experience and a new PvP-lite playlist.

It has been officially announced that Marathon Season 2 will be seeing two experimental modes, one of the largest updates yet to the extraction shooter. Bungie shared the news during their newest “Launch, Learnings, and What’s Next” blog post detailing the latest community requests and future updates for the game.

One mode will be PvE focused with some light PvP elements, while the other is described as a fully PvE experience with crew cooperating to progress between games. While both of these playlists are being labeled as experiments, they could drastically change how Marathon is played down the line.

Marathon Season 2 New Modes

The first playlist is said to arrive around the start of Season 2 and focus more on PvE content but with “lighter doses of PvP.” This suggests players can expect a similar Marathon vibe without quite as much on-fire paranoia. As for the second mode, players will not have to worry about other squads at all.

Crews will focus on completing objectives, shooting aliens, and progressing between games without the potential for other players popping up to ruin their fun.

This mode in particular could be a huge catalyst for casual players who love everything Marathon offers but find the full-on PvPvE formula a little too harsh. Not having to worry about other players could also allow newer folks to better explore maps and learn the game’s many systems without being swatted away like flies.

That being said, the lighter take on PvP might be the more impactful experiment in the long run. Instead of throwing the extraction formula out with the bathwater, finding a happy medium that reduces some of the player-counterplay feels keeps the stakes high without feeling draining.

Bungie has dipped their toes into a number of experimental queues in the past with duo’s and quality of life changes to the kit system. These two new modes are sure to be hit or miss with players but are the strongest indication that changes to Marathon’s formula are being considered post-launch.
