Leaks and rumours about Grand Theft Auto 6 have been coming fast and furious as its release date gets closer. One recent rumour has a mobile companion app being released by Rockstar Games alongside GTA 6. While the rumour is not fully confirmed, an internal job listing for Rockstar North at GTA 6’s lead development studio was found, hinting towards a new mobile integration project in the works.
Rockstar already has experience with mobile companion apps for games. Both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 launched with a second-screen companion app for mobile. Although, the app was somewhat underused for these two games.
But if Rockstar really commits to the companion app for GTA 6, the app could be a primary feature rather than just an afterthought. The fan community has already been thinking of ideas as to how this could fit with GTA 6’s open world, including a simulated in-game phone or further social media-like interactions.
What the GTA 6 Companion App Might Include
Mobile companion apps have fallen out of fashion in recent years, especially since Blizzard completely shut down the WoW app last year. But some developers, including Nintendo with its “Zelda Notes” features, have taken an interest in using apps to expand on gameplay features in-game.
Here are some of the features the GTA 6 app could have that have been suggested by fans so far, but not confirmed by Rockstar:
- Sync With In-Game Phone: Receive notifications and calls from NPCs in real life.
- Social Media Integration: Receive notifications or even act as a social media app tied to the fictional social media app from in-game.
- Clips and Screenshots: Record clips and gameplay screenshots and share them with friends through the app.
- Second-Screen Features: Access the map, mission log, or inventory while on the go.
Why a GTA 6 App Could Be a Game-Changer
Assuming this app is in the works, it could be a major innovation. An app of this quality and depth has the potential to blur the lines between game and reality more than before. It’s no surprise that Rockstar is the publisher that could pull this off - after all, they have the funding and history to make it.
It’s also not a huge surprise that this app could be a part of GTA 6 in particular, given that the game is also likely to push many other boundaries.
Of course, fans should temper their expectations. This is an unconfirmed rumour, and a project of this scope would take away from time and resources that would otherwise be dedicated to improving the core gameplay experience. We’ll just have to wait and see if Rockstar addresses this app in the future.
