State of Decay 3 is one of the big upcoming Xbox titles that we got to see at the recent Xbox Games Showcase 2024, albeit it was a very cinematic trailer with only small snippets of gameplay and no official release date, which suggested to me and many other State of Decay franchise fans that this one is still a couple of years away.
However, even though we only got to see the first-ever in-game footage of Undead Labs' title earlier this month, the game could be coming a bit earlier than everyone expected. According to reliable Xbox insider and Windows Central Gaming reporter Jez Corden, the State of Decay 3 is targeting the 2025 release window.
"I've heard State of Decay 3 is next year. I've heard they're gunning for 2025 for State of Decay 3," Corden said in the Xbox Two podcast. Unfortunately, he did not share any other inside info on the development of the game but did excitingly talk about some of the game's features like dismemberment and visual facelift.
This will probably be big news for the State of Decay community but before you start the hype train, keep in mind that there's always a chance State of Decay 3 does not launch next year.
As Corden's buddy Rand al Thor 19 said in the podcast, Microsoft could decide to let Undead Labs cook more content for the game and release it in 2026 since State of Decay 3's live service nature means they will need plenty of features and in-game activities to keep players engaged for a long period of time.
And obviously, Microsoft now have plenty of games so they can easily plan their release schedule without the fear of not having any games in specific parts of the year, which is what happened at the beginning of this gen.
In addition, game development is tough and there's always a chance of some road bumps here and there that could push the release date a couple of months into 2026. It's just something to keep in mind before you take the 2025 release date as set in stone.
