After more than three years since the first cinematic teaser, Xbox's open-world zombie survival shooter State of Decay 3 got a brand new trailer at today's Xbox Game Showcase.
The trailer set the tone for the game which has that classic State of Decay series look with recognisable eye-glowing zombie models but at the same time, it looks darker and more brutal with a lot more gore and a new limb damage system that the developer Undead Labs are developing for the third game.
In terms of the setting and the story, State of Decay 3 will be set years after the zombie apocalypse so you'll see zombies appear more "decayed, with darkened and shrivelled skin sucked close to their bones", according to Undead Labs.
In addition, the team confirmed a four-player co-op and a much larger shared world than before thanks to the help from Obsidian Entertainment who successfully implemented a similar feature in Grounded.
Also, if that wasn't obvious from the trailer, the game will be quite the looker with much more detailed environments, realistic lighting and gore. Gears of War studio The Coalition helped Undead Labs achieve these remarkable visuals according to the interview on Xbox Wire.
Undead Labs also confirmed exciting features like crafting, which will be very rewarding as well as deep customisation options for your character but also other elements. They promised to talk more about this in the near future.
Unfortunately, we didn't get too see much of the game's world and the different biomes as most of the gameplay was set in smaller or closed locations. There is a couple of shots showing dense pine forests that strongly remind me of other zombie games like Days Gone.
Undead Labs also made it pretty clear that the State of Decay 3 will be a massive game. In fact, it got so deep and big that it wouldn't be possible if the team were not part of Microsoft and had the budget and the technology of Xbox Game Studios.
"I don’t think we could achieve State of Decay 3’s vision if we weren’t part of Microsoft," said Creative Director Kevin Patzelt. "I think if had we stayed independent, there’s just no way we could have had the time and the space and the support that we needed to be where we are today and to put out what we know we can make."
State of Decay 3 will release on PC and Xbox Series X|S but it still does not have a release window, which is the only downside of this new announcement.
