Sony reportedly planning OLED version of PlayStation Portal for release in 2026, though unconfirmed

A new leak claims Sony is developing a PlayStation Portal OLED model for 2026, following the commercial success of the original handheld and recent cloud streaming upgrades.

Sony could be working on another new PlayStation Portal. According to various sources, Sony plans on releasing an OLED version of the Portal in 2026. This information is unconfirmed by Sony, but it’s another piece of the PlayStation handheld puzzle.

The majority of leaks this past year have surrounded a next-gen PlayStation handheld. Leaks continue to point to some form of handheld for Sony’s PlayStation 6 era.

However, this OLED Portal news diverts our attention back to the current-gen PlayStation Portal, suggesting Sony isn’t finished with it yet.

OLED PlayStation Portal Reportedly in Development

Via NeoGAF user KeplerL2, who has previously been credited with hardware leaks, it has been claimed that Sony has plans to release a future OLED revision to the PlayStation Portal.

Key points from the claim include:

  • Sony views the original PlayStation Portal as commercially successful
  • A new hardware revision is reportedly in development
  • The upgraded model is said to feature an OLED display
  • No official confirmation or announcement has been made

Why Would Sony Release an OLED Revision?

Interest in the PlayStation Portal was sparked once again last year when Sony enabled cloud streaming on the device. Initially launched as a local Remote Play device, PlayStation Portal users were given the option to stream select PS5 games through the cloud.

Streaming is only available to PlayStation Plus Premium members, but it grants the Portal many of the features found on PlayStation handheld devices. It’s likely that Sony will increase sales even further by implementing an OLED display.

Benefits of the OLED Portals could include:

  • Better contrast and picture quality
  • Easier to see details in dark scenes
  • Competitive with other premium handheld displays
  • Potentially attractive to customers who didn’t buy the original LCD Portal
  • Sony already has a healthy cloud streaming game library for the Portal.

It features many triple-A titles, so they likely believe there is staying power with the device and simply want to improve it moving forward.

It’s Still Just a Rumour

While these claims would line up logically, we must remember this is all unsubstantiated rumour. Sony has not stated anything about a possible OLED PlayStation Portal, or if the project is even in development.
