Painkiller, the reimagined version of the cult action shooter, is coming on October 9, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The game is being developed by Anshar Studios under 3D Realms and published via Saber Interactive and promises fast-paced demon-slaying action back with modern visuals, co-op support, and new character progression systems.
Pre-orders for both the Standard and Deluxe Editions are available now on digital platforms, with physical pre-orders open on consoles. Read on below for full details on the game and pre-orders.
Modernised Combat and Co-Op Play
Painkiller will aim to stay true to its roots with over-the-top gunplay, gothic environments, and a wave-based combat loop, now enhanced with up to three-player online co-op. Players can choose from four playable characters, Ink, Void, Sol, and Roch, each with unique gameplay perks focused on health, power, energy, or damage boosts.
Combat revolves around fast movement, brutal weaponry, and the use of tarot card upgrades to improve abilities and unlock more firepower. The game features a wide range of classic and new weapons, including the Electrodriver, Shotgun, Stakegun, SMG, Rocket Launcher, and Hand Cannon.
Story Overview
Set in a twisted version of purgatory, players must fight through hordes of demons after being sentenced for crimes against Heaven. The story follows the struggle against Azazel, a fallen angel whose monstrous offspring—the Nephilim—now threaten to invade Earth. Players must push back the darkness to earn their redemption.
