Bloober Team aims to make Cronos: The New Dawn their best horror game yet, and the recent combat deep dive trailer seems to be proof of that.

Cronos: The New Dawn continues to build intrigue ahead of its launch with a newly released developer diary focused entirely on the game’s combat mechanics.

In a five-minute video, Bloober Team touched upon some of the most interesting things related to their combat system, which comes with some unique features and good old classics that we've seen in other titles.

Tactical Combat With The Merge Mechanic

At the heart of Cronos: The New Dawn is a combat system built around tactical decision-making and constant adaptation, say Bloober Team. Every enemy encounter is shaped by a unique and evolving threat and that's where the unique Merge mechanic comes into play. As the name suggests, The Merge allows enemies to absorb nearby corpses mid-fight to transform into stronger and more dangerous forms.

This means that leaving too many bodies in close proximity can quickly turn a manageable skirmish into a seriously dangerous encounter.

Enemy types come in distinct roles - runners, rangers, bruisers, and tanks - each with its own strengths and vulnerabilities. The game's easier enemy types like runner or a ranger can turn into a bruiser or a tank if they continue to merge. It's truly something that I personally haven't seen in a horror game before, so kudos to Bloober for coming up with something unique.

The developer diary also highlights the importance of arena control. Not every environment is created equal. Some offer tactical advantages like natural chokepoints or flammable hazards, while others might leave you exposed. Players are encouraged to use their surroundings to their advantage to delay or prevent enemy merges.

To help you with that, the good old stomping is confirmed.

Tools and Progression

Cronos: The New Dawn will offer weapon and character upgrading. You'll also be able to craft ammunition and healing items, upgrade weapons, and enhance your suit to survive increasingly hostile encounters.

One of the tools is the weapon scanner, which can be upgraded to show enemy health in real time-helping you decide which monster to target first.
