According to Fallout New Vegas writer Chris Avellone, Obsidian made multiple proposals to Bethesda for Fallout and The Elder Scrolls spin-off games but sadly, the publisher were not interested in such projects.

Following the release of Fallout New Vegas, developer Obsidian wanted to work on more Fallout games but Bethesda were not interested, says former Obsidian Entertainment writer Chris Avellone.

The studio also pitched multiple proposals for The Elder Scrolls franchise too but the two studios could not reach an agreement that would result in more games. Avellone says that one of the Elder Scrolls proposals that he personally pitched was similar to Fallout New Vegas, serving to provide more adventures in the setting during the years before Bethesda's next release.

"Bethesda didn't want us messing with their core world, one was a spinoff where you adventured in an alternate TES world the last hero had failed to save in the last round of Elder Scroll titles," Avellone posted on X.

One of the reasons for Bethesda's scepticism towards such projects, Avallone finds in the reception of Fallout New Vegas, both good and bad. This probably means that Bethesda did not like the criticism they received for how buggy the game was on launch (Oh, the irony.)

On the other hand, Avallone seems to hint that Bethesda were somewhat jealous of the success of Fallout New Vegas, which is still considered one of the greatest Fallout games ever by many fans.

It's highly likely that Bethesda have changed their mind about this now that they and Obsidian are part of Xbox. We also heard some rumours that the Fallout New Vegas 2 project is real and could be coming in the latter part of this decade (2028-2029).

Reliable Jeff Grubb also reported a while back that people at Microsoft have started mentioning Obsidian and Fallout New Vegas 2 in the same sentence but these are still very early conversations so don't get too excited until we get an official confirmation.
