Today, Bethesda have officially announced that the Free Lanes update, the Terran Armada story DLC, and Starfield's PlayStation 5 launch will all arrive simultaneously on April 7, 2026.
Free Lanes Update
Free Lanes is the headliner of the free update, and it is a significant one. Players will finally be able to freely fly between planets within a star system rather than fast-travelling everywhere.
A new Cruise Mode accompanies this, letting you do everything you could do in orbit, decorating your ship, talking to companions, using workbenches, while actively travelling through space. New space points of interest will dynamically appear as you fly, and new encounters will pull you out of Cruise Mode and demand your attention.
Beyond travel, the update introduces X-Tech, a new resource used to re-roll legendary weapon effects and unlock new Tier 4 legendary modifiers. New quality tiers above Advanced have also been added, topping out at Superior and Exceptional. A Ship Optimisation Terminal lets you upgrade ship systems using X-Tech, a new shared outpost container connects all your outposts, and a new outpost pet called the Milliewhale can be unlocked via a quest at Anchorpoint Station, a brand new starstation with vendors and quests.
There is also a new Moon Jumper land vehicle, asteroid base home, Colony War Action Hero collectibles, new enemy modifiers, and New Game+ improvements including the Quantum Entanglement Device, which lets you carry favourite gear into a new playthrough.
Yeah, it's quite a lot of new stuff coming to Starfield.
Terran Armada DLC
Terran Armada is the paid DLC arriving alongside the free update, priced at $9.99. It introduces a new faction, former Colony War soldiers who believe themselves to be Earth's true heirs, now an advanced robotic military force emerging across the Settled Systems.
The new questline is woven into the existing game world, and outcomes carry consequences throughout the galaxy. You will also pick up a new companion, Delta, a reprogrammed Terran robot described by Design Director Emil Pagliarulo as "not evil, but definitely not good."
A new Incursion system adds repeatable content that can appear almost anywhere, ranging from small skirmishes to full-scale ship infiltrations. New Terran gear, ships, ship modules, and outpost content round out the package.
PlayStation 5 release date
PS5 players can jump in from April 7 with Premium Edition and Standard options available, with Terran Armada bundled into the Premium Edition.
