A slight tuning tweak is headed to Marathon as part of an experiment. Tests are currently underway which involve adjusting pacing on the Dire Marsh map. Matches being choked early is something Bungie hopes to improve with better flow.
The latest developer update details some information regarding player movement and pacing. Based on player behavior analysis on Dire Marsh, Bungie noticed congestion was happening a little too often.
Too many players and crews were stacking into vital choke points early on in matches. This was leading to less player agency and teams feeling rushed into starting fights. Trying to alleviate some of that congestion, the developers have decided to test a solution.
Crew Count Reduced to Improve Match Flow
The maximum number of crews allowed on Sponsored Dire Marsh has been decreased by one. This change applied at 3:30 PM PT April 22. It’s another small adjustment to match pacing.
With one less player on the map there should be fewer players overall. This gives everyone more room to spread out on the map. Ideally preventing teams from bumping into each other as much early in the game.
Players should have more time to loot, relocate, and set up ambushes before getting pushed into firefights. This change is being evaluated in the beta queue only. So, this new limit might not stick around.
Bungie will be monitoring match data and player feedback to see if this helps or hurts the player experience. Changes like this exemplify how small of a difference small details can make to the pacing of an extraction shooter.
Ideally, we’ll see less rushy matches with a better sense of progression if this change does stick. You’ll have a bit more breathing room the next time you play Sponsored Dire Marsh.
