Marathon hasn’t stopped growing since it released earlier this year, and Patch 1.0.6 continues the trend with one of the biggest progression additions yet. The update’s brand-new C.A.R.R.I. protocol aims to reward solo players and organized squads alike while adding more depth to Marathon‘s loot and progression systems in Tau Ceti.
C.A.R.R.I. stands for CyberAcme Runner Reinforcement Initiative, and it keeps track of players’ contract and extraction successes. Whether you’re living solo life or playing with a solid crew, C.A.R.R.I. rewards you handsomely and consistently for doing well.
Players earn CyberAcme Commendations by completing objectives and extracting successfully. Teammates earn commendations by completing contract objectives as a squad, while solo players earn commendations by completing objectives and extracting.
You’ll even earn commendations for extracting with someone else, even if you don’t typically fly solo. That last part is particularly interesting as it encourages some dynamic coop play while still rewarding players who finish strong.
Commendations can be used at the new C.A.R.R.I. Armory to unlock a slew of randomized rewards. These rewards range from weapons to Salvage Crates and Faction Reputation Packs.
Rather than leaving players to the cruel luck of draw fits, C.A.R.R.I. allows you to choose what reward pool to dip into. Daily refreshing rewards are also included here.
The update isn’t all about boosting progression, though. Several player-friendly additions have been implemented to encourage interaction. A new “Stay Together” option lets players form groups with whoever they successfully extracted with.
A new Mercy Kit consumable can be used on downed enemies to revive them as allies. Chat also receives an upgrade with a proximity toggle. Lastly, new Codex Challenges present players with long-term goals that reward players with unique titles when completed with other players.
Think of them as community goals. Catch-up mechanics have also been added for new players, including a temporary reputation boost and quality of life improvements to early-game-only maps. This should help ease new players into Marathon without totally deflating the on-foot peril that’s kept players coming back.
