Autofill in League of Legends is a system where players get roles that are different than the ones they queued up for. Riot Games explain it as a necessary measure to lower queue timers.
In patch 12.17, players noticed that the autofill protection, which ensures players get their desired role after playing an auto-filled game, is gone. It was due to a bug, as the feature replacing it is being introduced now, in patch 12.18.
"When autofill protection was initially introduced," said Riot, "support was by far the least popular role. However, role preferences have shifted over time and can also vary heavily by region. Around a year ago we made behind-the-scenes changes to proactively protect players from autofill if they were queuing for high-demand positions."
Now, our lobby, explain Riot, will highlight to us the roles that are, at the time of our queuing up for a game, high in demand. Should we pick one of those, we are guaranteed to be placed in that role.
- Pick me Option added: Selecting a priority role will protect you from being autofilled only in your upcoming game
- Support Supremacy removed: Guaranteed autofill protection when queuing as support or queuing as fill has been removed
- Recurring protection unchanged: Players will still receive autofill protection for 2 games after having played a game while auto-filled
So, all in all, it's a good change for players. Or at the very least, a fair one.No longer will mains of one role get auto-filled more than those maining another. Though we suspect junglers will still be in high demand.
